An Example of a SIMPLE LISTSERV Mailing List

The above List Header may have been configured by the LISTSERV Site Manager who manages your host site. Note that each line begins with an asterisk * followed by a space and the List Header keyword or comment. When you retrieve your List Header from the server, it automatically adds the
PUT listname LIST PW=XXXXXXX command at the top.

This section will describe the settings selected for each of the keyword parameters. For additional settings, click on the keyword.

* Subscription= Open,Confirm

Indicates that all new subscription requests will be processed without the intervention of the List Owner. The "Confirm" adds protection against forged subscription requests or bad return mailing paths. The prospective subscriber will then receive a subscription confirmation request which must be confirmed with the "OK" mechanism. Subscription= Open,Confirm is the default for all lists using LISTSERV Version 1.8c and later.

* Send= Private

Indicates that only subscribed members are allowed to post to a list. For a list where non-subscribers are allowed to post use Send= Public.

* Confidential= No

Indicates that a mailing list will not be hidden from a LIST command. (A LIST command is used to identify which lists are available on a server.) It also means that it will be listed in the CataListsm service maintained by L-Soft. This parameter is independent of Subscription= options, and whether a list has public or private archives.

To hide a list from a LIST command and CataListsm use Confidential= YES.

* Validate= Yes

The Validate= keyword controls the level of command validation desired for your list. When set as above, LISTSERV requires a password for all "protected" commands (i.e., DELete, ADD) from List Owners. List Subscribers will not need to validate their commands except for PW ADD or changes.

* Limits= Sub(50)

The usage of the keyword Limits= is dependent upon the version of LISTSERV at your host. For Ease-Home lists, it indicates the number of subscribers a list is allowed to have. Because it affects billing, Ease-Home List Owners must have the assistance of the Ease-Home Site Manager to change the value of this parameter.

This keyword does not apply under LISTSERV-Lite.

* Default-Options= REPRO,NOACK

This keyword defines the default options that all new subscribers will have at the time they join or are added to the list. REPRO indicates that subscribers will receive a copy when they post to the list (a NOREP setting will cause no copy to be sent). NOACK indicates that the subscriber will not receive a short e-mail message acknowledging that their post was received. (ACK would send them an acknowledgment). It is common to set one of these as positive and the other as negative since usually a copy of the post or an acknowledgment is desired, but not both.

Visit this link for a tutorial for setting individual subscriber options.

* Notebook= No

This keyword controls whether notebook archives will be saved for a list. The setting No indicates that posts are not to be saved. Furthermore, by default, Notebook= No disables the digests feature of your list. If you do not wish archives, yet still wish to enable a digest version, you must explicitly set the Digest= List Header keyword. You may need to request assistance from the LISTSERV Site Manager to correctly identify and update the parameters for Digest= when utilizing Notebook= No.

* Owner= jowner@DOMAIN.COM

This keyword identifies the e-mail address of the list owner. There may be several owners of a list. To add more owners, multiple Owner= lines would be used such as

* Owner= jowner@DOMAIN.COM
* Owner= another_owner@DOMAIN.COM
* Owner= yet_another_owner@DOMAIN.COM

To prevent additional owners from receiving LISTSERV administrative messages they can be set to Quiet owners in the following way:

* Owner= jowner@DOMAIN.COM
* Owner= Quiet:
* Owner= another_owner@DOMAIN.COM
* Owner= yet_another_owner@DOMAIN.COM

All owners listed after the Owner= Quiet: keyword (the ":" is required) will not receive list error messages. There must be at least one non-Quiet owner for a list.
