Abstract

The maximum number of recipients in each outbound, list-based mail message forwarded to the mail delivery system.

Example

z/VM:

MAXBSMTP = 50

Unix:

MAXBSMTP=50

export MAXBSMTP

Windows:

MAXBSMTP=50

Details

MAXBSMTP refers to the maximum number of recipients that will be bundled into a single BSMTP multiple-recipient message being sent out from a mailing list.

NOTE:  MAXBSMTP does not apply to any other type of outbound mail sent from LISTSERV, including but not limited to mail sent from the ALL-REQUEST pseudo-mailbox.

If you are limited to x number of recipients per envelope and you have more than x number of list owners across all of your lists, you will want to avoid using the ALL-REQUEST address to communicate with your list owners, as the outbound mail will fail when it is rejected by your outbound mail server.

If your mail delivery system runs on a unix machine, you should use values in the 50-100 range; smaller values will result in faster delivery, but will use up more system resources.

MAXBSMTP is an optimization parameter that you would normally set through the Optimization Settings tab in the web administration interface.

If you use a third-party SMTP mailer service, you may need to set MAXBSMTP to a value lower than the default in order to meet their maximum recipients per message limit.  If you are unsure, contact the third-party service and ask them.
